Films from Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Ecuador... Selected for the Toronto Film Festival

The Toronto Film Festival unveiled today the slate of titles that will screen as part of its contemporary world cinema and discovery programs at its upcoming 2021 edition, which includes several Latin American titles from Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, and Mexico.

Two Latin American films will have their world premiere in the discovery competition at the Canadian festival: the Ecuadorean dazzling and mysterious film Lo Invisible, the second feature film by Javier Andrade (Porcelain Horse) that follows a woman who comes home from a psychiatric clinic after a bout with severe postpartum depression; and and the Argentine film To Kill the Beast, the debut feature by Agustina San Martín that is a bold piece of tropical gothic that puts young female desire at the centre of its loose narrative.

Having its North American premiere in the contemporary world cinema section at the Canadian festival are the Mexican films The Box / La caja by Venezuelan director Lorenzo Vigas, and The Other Tom / El otro Tom by Uruguayan-born Rodrigo Plá and Laura Santullo; and the Brazilian film Medusa by Anita Rocha da Silveira. Rounding up the Latin American contingent in the contemporary world cinema section is the Dominican action-packed thriller La Soga 2, the directorial debut by Manny Perez.

Additionally, TIFF announced the screening of the Mexican film Sundown by Michel Franco in its North American premiere as a special presentation, and a conversation between director Patricia Cardoso and actress America Ferrera on their 2002 film Real Women Have Curves as part of the Rewind series, a free array of digital talks with filmmakers and casts of popular films.

The 46th edition of the Toronto Film Festival will take place September 9-18.
